|Berendina Employment Center (BEC), conducted a one day training program on the theme ‘Enhancing and developing the skills of unemployed youth and providing career counseling to create employable youth’ on the 29th of May for 104 government officials in the south who are working with youth. This program was conducted for Human Resource Development Officers, Skills Development Officers and Career Guidance Officers attached to the Divisional and District Secretariats as well as branches of the Vocational Training Authority (VTA) in the Galle and Matara districts. The program was conducted by Mr. Mohan Palliyaguruge, a well known psychological counselor and motivational speaker at the Ahangama Hotel School of VTA.
At the training programme, important concepts pertaining to career guidance such as, the need for proper career counseling, understanding the attitudinal and thinking patterns of youth, new trends in the job market were discussed. Further current challenges in career counseling and attitudinal changes required to be developed by careers counselors and examination of the difference between career guidance and career counseling was also examined and discussed. These discussions were also supported with appropriate practical exercises. The man objective of the training program was to provide participants with a wealth of new information on the topic and help them excel in their current job roles by refreshing their knowledge on career counseling.
Officials present at the opening ceremony of the training program were, Ms. P.B Muditha, Director, Department of Employment Promotion and Manpower attached to the Ministry of Productivity Promotion and Manpower, Ms. A.M Kariyawasam, Divisional Secretary- Habaraduwa, Mr. Dulan De Silva, Chairman of the Berendina group, Mr. Nimalsiri Vidanapathirana, , Asst. Director Vocational Training Authority -Galle district , Mr. A.M. A Jayatissa, Asst. Director e Vocational Training Authority - Matara district, Mr. Deeptha Paranamanna, Senior Career Guidance Officer attached to the Matara District Secretariat, Mr. Hemantha Harischandra, General Manager of the BEC, Mr. Jayatissa Manamperi, Senior Manager of the BEC and Mr. T.L.D Sajintha , Manager of the BEC Galle Branch.
Ms. P.B Muditha, Director, Ministry of Productivity Promotion and Manpower addressing the audience at the opening ceremony stated that, although the Government was keen to provide such vital training programs to relevant government officials, due to the lack of resource allocation such programs have remained stagnant for several years. Ms. Muditha expressed her gratitude to the Berendina organization for providing such vital training programs to build the capacity of government officials.
The training program is expected to indirectly benefit over 1000 ‘s of youth in the Galle and Matara districts.
