Construction jobs for vulnerable youth

Berendina Employment Centre (BEC) signed a tri-partite agreement with the World University Service of Canada in Sri Lanka (WUSC) and World Vision – Paddipalai ADP (WV) in February 2017 with an intention of empowering youth with skills to gain employment in the construction industry. According to the agreement signed at Hightec Lanka International in Kurunegala, the main objective of the partnership is to facilitate the vocational training institute to conduct a backhoe loader operator course and train 20 unemployed and unskilled youths. The trainees for this exercise were selected from Eravurpattu, Poratheevupattu and Paddipalai Divisional Secretariat DS Division in the Batticaloa District. According to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the Construction Association of Batticaloa is responsible to provide jobs to 20 trained youths while HIghtec Lanka, a vocational training institution, will train the selected youth. The cumulative funding required to conduct the backhoe loader course amounts to Rs. 1,075,000.00 of which WUSC contributes Rs. 625,000.00, WV contributes Rs. 200,000.00, and BEC Rs. 150,000.00. The contribution from students’ amounts to Rs. 100,000.00
